COUNCIL TO MAKE FINAL DECISION ON PROPERTY PURCHASE FOR POTENTIAL URBAN CAMPGROUND
KQEN News Radio

The Roseburg City Council will consider making a final decision on purchasing property in the southeast end of the city to use as a potential urban campground, as part of its meeting Monday night.
The site under review is at 1899 Southeast Stephens Street and is the former location of Reddaway Trucking. The just over 2.5-acre property includes a terminal building that is over 4,000 square feet, along with a raised dock that is approximately 2,000 square feet. There is also an office building which is just over 1,000 square feet.
The site sits below the grade of Southeast Stephens and is served by a one-way frontage road to the west. The site also has access to Southeast Main Street to the east. It is bordered by Parrott Creek to the north with the Parrott House restaurant on the other side. An appraiser has determined the value of the property to be $695,000.
City staff have created two preliminary layouts for the property showing the potential to accommodate between 79 and 86 tent sites. Fencing the entire site is expected to cost approximately $50,000.
The city already executed a preliminary purchase agreement for the property back on July 25th and has been in a due diligence period. Councilors can direct staff to acquire the property, cancel the purchase agreement or request more information.
The council will discuss the issue in an Executive Session at 6:00 p.m. A vote will be made near the end of the regular meeting which begins at 7:00 p.m. Other items are on the agenda as well.
The meeting will be held in the council chambers of Southeast Douglas Avenue. It can be seen on the city’s Facebook page or viewed later at www.cityofroseburg.org

COUNTY CELEBRATES O’DELL AS REGION JUVENILE JUSTICE PROFESSIONAL
KQEN News Radio

The Douglas County Board of Commissioners along with the Juvenile Department have announced that Holly O’Dell has been named the 2025 Southern Region Juvenile Justice Professional of the Year by the Oregon Juvenile Department Directors Association.
A county release said the honor was awarded during OJDDA’s annual conference held earlier this month in Eugene. The award formally recognizes an outstanding juvenile justice professional from Oregon’s southern region, which includes Jackson, Klamath, Josephine, Douglas, Curry, Coos and Lane counties. It is based on nominations submitted by County Juvenile Directors.
O’Dell was nominated by Douglas County Juvenile Department Director Wendy Lang for her exceptional dedication and leadership in juvenile justice. Lang said, “Holly leads by example. Her integrity, ethics, and work ethics have earned her the respect of the entire department”. O’Dell began with the department in 2007 and now after multiple promotions is a Juvenile Counselor III.
Douglas County Commissioner and Juvenile Department Liaison Chris Boice said, “We’re incredibly proud to have Holly as part of Douglas County, she represents the heart of what public service is all about”.
AFRC AND CALFORESTS URGE FOREST SERVICE TO RESCIND THE ROADLESS RULE
KQEN News Radio

Late last week, the American Forest Resource Council and California the Forestry Association submitted formal comments to the U.S. Forest Service in support of rescinding the 2001 Roadless Area Conversation Rule.
The two associations, representing forest products manufacturers and forest land stewards across the West, say the nationwide, top-down rule has hindered science-based forest management on federal lands at a time when wildfire threats, drought and insect outbreaks are growing more severe.
An AFRC release said the Roadless Rule prohibits or restricts access and active management on nearly 59 million acres of National Forest System lands, including many landscapes in the West most at risk of catastrophic wildfire and insect mortality. In their comments, AFRC and Calforests write that the rule is outdated, duplicative and scientifically unjustified.
AFRC President and CEO Travis Joseph said, “Rescinding the Roadless Rule will not undermine the Northwest Forest Plan or environmental safeguards. It simply restores flexibility for local forest professionals to consider limited road access where necessary for science-based restoration or emergency response”. Joseph said, “That’s essential in these federally-owned forests where treatment options are shrinking while wildfire risks are growing”.
The release said the organizations urged the Forest Service to ensure its Environmental Impact Statement reflects the best available science and input from stakeholders who depend on healthy, accessible public lands for their livelihoods, safety, and stewardship work”
