KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Valley will see one more day of unseasonably hot conditions with highs in the low 90s expected for Wednesday.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that a dry front will bring cooling to the region beginning on Thursday. Tuesday’s high temperature was 91 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport.
DOUGLAS COUNTY EMPLOYERS ADD 60 JOBS IN AUGUST
KQEN News Radio

Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted payroll employment increased by 60 jobs in August after a decrease of 220 in July and an increase of 160 in June.
A State of Oregon Employment Department release said in the not seasonally adjusted private-sector industries in August, there were relatively large gains of 60 in transportation, warehousing and utilities, and of 30 in professional and business services. There was a loss of 40 in manufacturing.
Regional Economist Brian Rooney said government increased by 110 in the month of August from gains in local government.
Rooney said when comparing August 2025 with August 2024, seasonally adjusted total nonfarm employment increased by 90 jobs or 0.2 percent. There was a relatively large private-sector over-the-year gain of 400 in private education and health services. There were relatively large losses of 150 in retail trade, of 70 in manufacturing and of 50 in construction.
OED said government held steady over the year in August due to a drop of 30 in federal government that was countered by an increase of 30 in local government.
Rooney said Douglas County’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate edged up to 6.1 percent in August compared with a revised 5.9 percent in July. The rate is up significantly from 5.4 percent in August 2024. Douglas County’s record low unemployment rate was set in November 2019 at 4.4 percent. The Oregon seasonally adjusted August rate was 5.0 percent, and the U.S. rate was 4.3 percent.
ROSEBURG LIBRARY CELEBRATES SUMMER READING PROGRAM
KQEN News Radio

The Summer Reading Program is over, and the Roseburg Public Library is celebrating the success of 12 weeks of special activities and reading fun for all ages.
A city release said youth logged 354,480 minutes of reading. More than 300 children read at least seven hours and 246 of them completed the program by reading for 21 hours. Although 72 fewer youth participated in the program than last year, there was an increase of 58 children who completed it.
The book review portion of the program remained popular was 217 youths submitting 1,534 reviews. Those numbers were down as well compared with last year when 276 children completed 2,106 reviews.
The library distributed 3,000 new, free books at the library and during outreach events. Library Director Kris Wiley said her favorite part of the Summer Reading Program was watching kids select books for their personal libraries when they logged seven hours of reading. Wiley loved watching some of Youth Services Librarian Aurora Ropp’s 73 special events that were enjoyed by nearly 3,800 people.
Wiley said, “Now that the dust has settled on this year’s program, we would appreciate feedback from children, parents and caregivers”. The Youth Summer Reading Program Survey can be completed at www.roseburgpubliclibrary.org through Tuesday, September 30th.
The Summer Library Program for Youth was made possible by Mike and Barb Coen, Douglas County Cultural Coalition, Friends of the Roseburg Public Library and the State Library of Oregon.

UCAN FOOD BANK WITH EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT DINNER FUNDRAISER
KQEN News Radio

The United Community Action Network Food Bank has scheduled their Empty Bowls Project Dinner fundraiser for Monday, October 6th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Joyce Morgan Food Distribution Center on UCAN’s campus.
A UCAN release said Empty Bowl’s is UCAN’s annual community event to fight hunger. Local potters, craftspeople, educators and community members create handcrafted bowls, and attendees enjoy the experience of selecting a bowl and sharing a meal of soup and bread. At the end of the evening, guests can take their bowl home as a reminder of empty bowls in the community or donate it back for future years.
A long list of local restaurants and businesses are participating and donating to the dinner. The evening will also include music and both wine and craft beer from several local wineries and beer outlets.
UCAN Food Bank Manager Val Gordon said this year’s goal is to raise $75,000 to help feed hope in Douglas County. Gordon said, “With food costs climbing, the demand has reached an all-time high”.

41ST ANNUAL UMPQUA RIVER’S CLEANUP IS OCTOBER 11TH
KQEN News Radio

The 41st annual Umpqua Rivers Cleanup is happening on Saturday, October 11th.
An Umpqua Watersheds release said community members from around the Umpqua Valley are invited to roll up their sleeves and make a difference during this long-standing tradition.
Sponsored by Umpqua Watersheds, Native Fish Society and Thrive Umpqua, this year’s cleanup continues a legacy of care for the rivers that sustain fish, wildlife, and communities. Volunteers will gather to remove trash and debris from riverbanks, boat ramps, and recreation sites throughout the basin – helping restore habitat, protect water quality and keep the Umpqua a place where people and ecosystems thrive.
Julie Lowe of Umpqua Watersheds said, “This event has become a decades-long symbol of our region’s commitment to clean water and health rivers”. Lowe said, “Each bag of trash collected makes a real difference for salmon, lamprey, native fish, and for all of us who depend on these waters”.
The cleanup will be taking place at Umpqua River locations throughout the area. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes, dress for the weather, and bring gloves if available. Trash bags and disposal can be provided by Umpqua Watersheds.
Coordinators are available to guide volunteers to specific river locations, assist with removing trash or direct efforts where they are needed most. Participants are welcome to work independently or join a coordinator-led effort.
