Douglas County Morning News
Drift Smoke Brings Poor Air Quality to Douglas County
The Roseburg Receiver

Smoke drifting into Douglas County from large fires burning in southern Oregon, including the Moon Complex, has led to noticeably hazy skies and unhealthy air quality levels this weekend.
According to the Douglas Forest Protective Association (DFPA), there are currently no active fires burning on DFPA-protected lands. Instead, the smoke is traveling into the region from out-of-district wildfires.
Air Quality Index (AQI) monitors across the county show “Unhealthy” readings in some areas, particularly around Roseburg, while other locations report moderate to poor conditions. Residents may experience irritation of the eyes, throat, and lungs, and sensitive groups such as children, older adults, and those with respiratory conditions are encouraged to limit outdoor activity.
Officials recommend staying indoors when possible, using air purifiers or filtered ventilation, and wearing a properly fitted N95 mask if exposure to smoke outdoors is unavoidable.
For up-to-date air quality conditions, residents can check AirNow.gov or local monitoring stations.
Missing Tiller teen found safe, reunited with family
The Roseburg Receiver

Deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office announced this weekend that Kayleigh Ann Prukop, believed to be between 12 and 16 years old, has been located and is safe. She has been reunited with her family, and authorities said no additional details will be released this weekend.
Sheriff’s deputies thanked the community for its assistance in locating Kayleigh. Earlier updates had asked residents and travelers to remain vigilant and to report any sightings, dashcam footage or other information that might help investigators. Deputies previously emphasized that even small details can be important in locating a missing person.
An earlier update from Sept. 27 described the ongoing search and said deputies believed it was possible Kayleigh had met up with someone or accepted a ride, though all possibilities were being investigated at that time. That notice included Kayleigh’s description and a request for anyone with information to contact the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office at (541) 440-4471, referencing case number 25-3392.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed appreciation for the tips and support from community members that helped bring Kayleigh home safely.
90-year-old Riddle Resident Found Deceased After Search

Deputies from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office confirmed at about 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 27, 2025 that the body of Shirley Hart, 90, was located near her residence in the 1300-block of Canyonville-Riddle Road. Deputies notified her next of kin; the Douglas County Medical Examiner’s Office has been notified and is investigating the death. Authorities said there are no indications of foul play at this time, and no further information is expected to be released immediately.
Earlier the same day, at about 12:30 p.m., deputies and search-and-rescue crews began an active search for Mrs. Hart after she wandered away from her home during the night. Mrs. Hart was described as having gray hair, weighing about 90 pounds, wearing dentures and likely barefoot; her clothing was unknown when the search began. Deputies noted she has dementia and considered her to be at risk, and they asked nearby residents to check unlocked vehicles and outbuildings where she was known to sometimes enter and sleep.
The Sheriff’s Office expressed gratitude to the many volunteers and community members who assisted in the search. Agencies that assisted included Douglas County Search and Rescue, REACH Air Medical Services, Cow Creek Tribal Police Department and the Myrtle Creek Police Department. The Sheriff’s Office extended its deepest sympathies to the Hart family.
Anyone with information relevant to the case should follow official Douglas County Sheriff’s Office guidance; at this time, investigators are handling the matter and additional details will be released only as appropriate.
