Roseburg Area Morning News

TWO MORE DAYS WITH WELL ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES FOR ROSEBURG

KQEN News Radio

The Umpqua Valley should see two more days with well above normal temperatures before gradual cooling begins as a weak low-pressure system moves into the region.

Forecasters at the Natonal Weather Service in Medford told News Radio 93-9 FM and 1240 KQEN that highs should remain in the low to mid-90s through Thursday. On Friday afternoon temperatures should drop to the upper 80s. Seasonal norms are expected for the weekend with highs in the mid-80s.

Forecasters said there is a slight change of thunderstorms in the area, but those will likely stay well east of Roseburg.

The high temperature Tuesday was 93 degrees at the Roseburg Regional Airport.

GOVERNOR ISSUES STATEMENT ON SPECIAL SESSION DELAY

KQEN News Radio

Governor Tina Kotek has issued a statement in response to the delay in the final deliberation of the transportation bills in the special session of the Oregon State Legislature.

Governor Kotek said, “I am making a good faith assessment, with the assurances of Senate leaders, that the bill passed by the House on Monday will pass when the Sate reconvenes”.

Governor Kotek said, “With assurances from legislative leadership, I have directed ODOT to extend the effective date of the layoffs to October 15th. This date will make sure there are no interruptions for the hundreds of workers whose jobs hang in the balance and the basic services Oregonians relay on”.

Governor Kotek said, “I want to acknowledge Senator Gorsek for his tireless work during this year’s session. I know he wants to get the job done on transportation. I wish Senator Gorsek a speedy recovery and am keeping him and his family in my thoughts”.

Governor Kotek concluded, “I would also like to thank the Senate Republicans for their professionalism while one of their colleagues is recovering”.

A vote on the transportation package is now scheduled for September 17th. Gresham Democratic State Senator Chris Gorsek is reportedly unable to come back to the capital at this time, due to complications from a recent surgery, according to multiple media reports.

RED FLAG WARNING EXTENDED FOR MOUNTAIN AREAS IN REGION

KQEN News Radio

A Red Flag Warning has been extended for mountain areas in parts of southern and south-central Oregon.

Forecasters at the National Weather Service in Medford said the warning remains in place through Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. for the Umpqua National Forest, Southern Oregon Cascades and surrounding areas.

Forecasters said scattered thunderstorms with abundant lightning are possible. Storms may produce little or no rain, and lightning strikes outside of precipitation cores are possible, and may cause many new fire starts. Wind gusts of 35 to 50 miles per hour could travel outward up to 25 miles from thunderstorm cores.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when forecasters identify conditions that promote rapid spread of fire which may become life threatening.

DADS CREEK FIRE 25 PERCENT CONTAINED, EVACUATIONS CANCELLED

KQEN News Radio

Firefighters with the Douglas Forest Protective Association are making significant progress in containing the 145-acre Dads Creek Fire, about 5 miles west of Glendale.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said crews have completed mop-up within 50 feet of the perimeter, increasing containment to 25 percent. Pope said in coordination with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Level 1 evacuation orders were lifted Tuesday afternoon for homes near the fire.

Pope said additional ordered resources have begun demobilizing. The remaining crews are continuing 24-hour mop-up efforts, allowing night crews to take advantage of cooler temperatures to advance their work. For safety reasons, a temporary Bureau of Land Management Road Closure remains in place in the area. The closure includes Cow Creek Road from the Ruben Historic Site to the intersection with Dad’s Creek.

DFPA DEALS WITH WELLS ROAD FIRE IN THE ELKTON AREA

KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association and rural agencies dealt with a fire in the Elkton area on Tuesday.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said at approximately 1:10 p.m. the fire was reported near the 2400 block of Wells Creek Road.

Pope said upon arrival, crews found an estimated 2 acres of brush and grass burning and spreading uphill. The quick response from everyone involved, including landowners and DFPA’s resources such as two type 2 helicopters, air attack, five type 6 engines, two type 3 engines, a dozer, ground crews and overhead personnel, quickly knocked down the fire’s forward spread. Pope said the final size of the Wells Road Fire is estimated to be between 7 and 8 acres.

Crews will continue to line the fire and transition into mop up. Once the fire is fully extinguished, it will be placed under patrol status. Pope said the fire was human caused and is under investigation.

DFPA was assisted by the Elkton Rural Fire Protection District, Kellogg Rural Fire District and North Douglas County Fire & EMS.

ADAPT SELECTS NEW CEO TO BEGIN ON OCTOBER 6TH

KQEN News Radio

Adapt Integrated Health Care has announced that its board of directors has selected Stephen Baron to be the organization’s next chief executive officer.

An Adapt release said Baron will officially assume the role on October 6th, following the retirement of CEO Dr. Gregory Brigham, who concludes a 43-year career in behavioral health, including the past decade of service to the communities of southwest Oregon through Adapt.

Adapt Board Chair Kelsey Wood said, “This moment marks a new chapter for Adapt”. Wood said, “We are confident that our new CEO will carry forward the incredible legacy of Dr. Greg Brigham and the organization’s values while strengthening its capacity to serve the people of Coos, Curry, Douglas and Josephine counties. Their experience and vision will be instrumental as Adapt continues to grow and respond to the evolving needs of the communities we serve”.

Dr. Brigham said, “This is a positive and exciting time for Adapt”. Dr Brigham said, “I am grateful for the support of our community and all we’ve accomplished together, and I look forward to supporting Stephen as he steps into this role – just as my predecessor, Bruce Piper, supported me. This next chapter is an opportunity to continue growing and serving our communities with integrity and care”.

The release said Mr. Baron will spend his first week’s meeting with internal teams, engaging with stakeholders, and attending the 2025 Oregon Council for Behavioral Health conference. An internal welcome event, public welcome event and media engagement period are scheduled to begin the week of October 20th.
