Though Fall Is Here, Fire Season Is Not Over
The Roseburg Receiver

Cooler weather and occasional rain might feel like the end of fire season, but the Oregon Department of Forestry warns that wildfire risk remains high across the state and fire regulations are still in effect until a season-ending soaking rain arrives. “With the temperature changes, it’s easy to think that fires are lessening or that fire season is over. However, we are still seeing new fire starts daily throughout the state and fire regulations remain in place,” said Michael Curran, ODF Fire Protection Division Chief.
ODF reports it has responded to 1,091 fires on protected lands so far this year, 671 of which were caused by people. Dry fuels combined with common fall east winds continue to create conditions where wildfires can ignite and spread rapidly, officials said. While some districts have lowered fire danger ratings, most of Oregon remains in the moderate to high range, so restrictions meant to prevent late-season ignitions will stay until consistent, soaking rains arrive.
Residents are urged to take simple but critical prevention steps. Debris burning remains the top cause of human-caused fires and is prohibited statewide during fire season; cover burn piles now and wait until the season officially ends before burning. For campfires and warming fires, always check local restrictions, never leave fires unattended, and make sure they are fully extinguished until cold to the touch. Vehicle owners should avoid parking over dry grass, keep their vehicles and ATVs regularly serviced, and secure tow chains to prevent sparks — more than 100 fires this year have been started by vehicles.
For the latest information on fire restrictions, safety guidance, and wildfire prevention resources, Oregonians can visit Oregon.gov/odf and KeepOregonGreen.org.
