DFPA DECREASES IFPL’S AND PUBLIC USE RESTRICTIONS

KQEN News Radio

Effective Tuesday, the Douglas Forest Protective Association has decreased the Industrial Fire Precaution Levels to IFPL Level 2 on all lands protected by DFPA, which includes lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said Public Use Restrictions have decreased to Moderate for all private, county, state and Bureau of Indian Affairs lands within the Douglas District, which imposes certain fire restrictions on the public to help prevent wildfires.

For the public, non-industrial power saw usage, cutting, grinding, or welding of metal, cutting, trimming, or mowing of dried, cured grass, power-driven machinery for non-industrial improvement or development on private property is only allowed before 1:00 p.m. or after 8:00 p.m.

Complete information on changes to restrictions for industrial operators is available at: www.dfpa.net

DFPA ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN LIGHTNING RECONNAISSANCE

KQEN News Radio

Crews with the Douglas Forest Protective Association have been actively involved in lightning reconnaissance and initial attack following several lightning storms that occurred on Monday.

DFPA Public Information Officer Rachel Pope said firefighters responded to numerous smoke investigations. Pope said of those responses, four have been confirmed fires. Of those, two are contained.

*Green Mountain Fire: Located 2.5 miles northeast of Drain, the estimated 0.33 acres fire is 100 percent lined, plumbed, and in mop-up status

*Boswell Fire: One single lightning-struck tree fire has been confirmed near the 1100 block of Boswell Road in the Yoncalla area. The fire is 100 percent mopped up and in patrol status.

DFPA and Coos Forest Protective Association crews are engaged on two lightning-struck trees in a remote area about 7 miles southwest of Elkton. Aerial reconnaissance was used to monitor fires until weather conditions required grounding. For safety reasons, DFPA’s air attack has been grounded until the weather permits.

Pope said these fires pose no threat to homes or structures. Lightning reconnaissance efforts will continue. Scattered thunderstorms with a chance of lightning are expected to persist across the area until Tuesday night.

NEW GRANTS MARK FIVE-YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF LABOR DAY FIRES

KQEN News Radio

Five years after the Labor Day megafires devastated parts of Oregon, 11 nonprofits are receiving new funding to help communities continue to recover and prepare for future disasters:

The Oregon Community Foundation has announced $120,000 in new grants from its Disaster Readiness and Response Fund, to help organizations in areas impacted, including Douglas County.

An OCF release said the fund is an initiative that emerged from the 2020 wildfires. It provides rapid response grants for immediate recovery and supports preparedness that helps to build more resilient communities. As a collective giving fund, anyone can contribute to it. An earlier fund to support wildfire recovery after the 2020 fires distributed $10.8 million over several years.

OCF Director of Statewide Community Programs and Disaster Resilience Kim Koenig said, “The fires of 2020 changed Oregon forever – but they didn’t define us”. Koenig said, “Oregonians came together then, and we’re coming together now to prepare for the future. We’re not just remembering what happened five years ago. We’re reimagining how Oregon shows up for each other long into the future”.

Among the organizations receiving assistance is Glide Revitalization, which is getting $10,000 to help with its work.

PITCH NIGHT GRAND FINALE FALL LINEUP IS SET

KQEN News Radio

After almost one year, the field is now set for the Umpqua Growth Talk’s Grand Finale Pitch Night October 23rd at Backside Brewing in Roseburg.

A release from the Umpqua Economic Development Partnership said with the most recent Pitch Night event now complete, the first and second place finishers from each of the previous three events will compete for their share of $10,000 in prize funds.

Pitch Night is a program of the UEDP. Executive Director Brian Prawitz said, “This is the big finish to another exciting year of discovering and supporting some of the best new businesses in Douglas County”.   Prawitz said, “Our pitchers, coaches, judges and sponsors have all been committed to this process since the beginning of the year, It will be fun to see how it all shakes out”.

Ryan and Kellen Cram earned first place honors on March 6 with their presentation of Good Vibes Foam Party. Joy Marlow of Infinity Professional Cleaners also qualified for the finals with her second-place finish on that night.

Wyatt Bradley of Wyatt’s Waterfowl Co. and Jill Fay of Better Together Events & Rentals were the top finishers at the June 26 Pitch Night event, sending them to the October finals. The final two slots were filled September 4 when Amanda Nash Shields of Public Spectacle and Desirae Morin of Cattle Dogs Golf Center were declared the top two finishers.

Now, all six participants will prepare their presentations to conclude the Pitch Night year. Like the previous three events, each finalist will have 5 minutes to present their business to a panel of judges in front of a live audience. Judges will have 5 minutes to question each presenter.

The first-place finisher will receive $5,000 and the title of 2025 Pitch Night Champion. $2,500 will go to the second-place finisher, and $1,250 will be awarded to the third-place finisher and the Audience Choice winner for a total of $10,000.

Audience registration for the October 23rd event is now open. Tickets are free, but attendees are asked to RSVP. For more information, go to www.umpquagrwothtalks.com

DAISY AWARD FOR EXTRAORDINARY NURSE AT CHI MERCY HEALTH

KQEN News Radio

Tammy St. Amand of Mercy Medical Center was recently honored with The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. The award is part of the DAISY Foundations programs to recognize the super-human efforts nurses perform every day.

A Mercy release said St. Amand was selected through a nomination process.

The not-for-profit DAISY Foundation is based in Glen Ellen, California and was established by family members in memorial of J. Patrick Barnes. Barnes died at the age of 33 in late 1999 from a little known but non uncommon auto-immune disease. The care Barnes and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and patient families.

Mercy Chief Nursing Officer Holly Cook said, “It’s an honor to initiate this local award, and Tammy uniquely represents someone truly called to be a nurse. Her heart for others, her deep expertise and her constant patient focus shine. We are profoundly grateful to have her among us and to present her with this well-deserved award”.

CHI Mercy Health plans to honor nurses a few times a year.
