Myrtle Creek Woman Arraigned Following Child Injury Incident

CANYONVILLE, Ore. — A Myrtle Creek woman, 31-year-old Kati Ann Steensland, appeared in Douglas County Circuit Court Tuesday following an incident in which a child was reportedly injured after falling from her pickup.

Court records indicate the child’s arm was run over by a rear tire but the injury was not considered life-threatening. The child was transported to the hospital for treatment, and a second child in the vehicle was also evaluated but was not reported injured.

Steensland was initially charged with third-degree assault, a felony, but the charge has since been reduced to a misdemeanor. A related neglect charge was dropped prior to arraignment. She now faces multiple misdemeanor counts, including fourth-degree assault, reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, third-degree escape, second-degree criminal mischief, and two counts of recklessly endangering another person.

A felony charge of failing to perform the duties of a driver was also filed, as authorities allege she left the scene. Oregon law requires drivers involved in injury crashes to remain on scene and render aid.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies responded Monday evening to reports of a pickup being driven recklessly in Stanton Park with children riding unsafely in the truck. A later call reported that a child had been struck by a vehicle on South Main Street in Canyonville. Deputies said the vehicle involved matched the earlier report, and Steensland was located nearby with the assistance of citizens and an off-duty Oregon State Police trooper.

Steensland’s bail was set at $10,000. She remains in custody at the Douglas County Jail and is scheduled to return to court Monday.
