New Traffic Signal at Highway 42 and Rolling Hills Road Expected to Go Live This Week
ODOT plans to activate the new Oregon 42 traffic signal at Rolling Hills Road by Wednesday night. Lane closures continue as crews finish installation. The signal is part of an $11.97M safety and paving project, with more median improvements coming in the weeks ahead.
GREEN DISTRICT — ODOT expects to switch on the new traffic signal at the intersection of Oregon 42 and Rolling Hills Road as early as Wednesday night, Nov. 19, marking a major milestone in the ongoing safety and paving project along the corridor.
Crews will be working through the first part of the week to install the mast arms and signal heads, with intermittent lane closures expected. Drivers traveling through the area should slow down, watch for workers, and follow posted traffic control.
Once activated, the new signal will feature push-button pedestrian crossings on all four sides of the intersection. ODOT officials caution that it may take several days for drivers and pedestrians to adjust to the new traffic pattern, and urge extra awareness during the transition.
The signal installation is part of a broader $11.97 million improvement project that includes repaving 4.5 miles of highway, adding new streetlights, constructing two right-turn lanes, upgrading more than a dozen ADA curb ramps, and implementing several additional safety elements.
In the coming weeks, contractors will begin placing concrete barriers and raised traffic separators in the center median of Oregon 42 between Carnes Road and Rolling Hills Road. These barriers are designed to reduce crashes by restricting left turns in areas where they have historically been a safety concern.
Residents along the westbound side of the highway—particularly near Landers Avenue and Melody Lane—will be impacted by the new turn restrictions. To accommodate these changes, ODOT has added U-turn locations at Carnes Road and Rolling Hills Road, allowing drivers to safely reverse direction.
Prime contractor Rocky Mountain Construction LLC of Klamath Falls, which began work in February, has already paved one mile of roadway, completed all sidewalk work, installed new right-turn lanes at Landers Avenue and Rolling Hills Road, and placed new guardrail.
The project is scheduled for completion by September of next year, with additional paving and finishing work to continue over the coming months.
