Remembering the Roseburg Blast: August 7, 1959

On this day in 1959, the city of Roseburg, Oregon, was forever changed by one of the most devastating industrial explosions in state history. Known as the “Roseburg Blast,” the incident left a lasting impact on the community, reshaping its downtown and etching memories that still resonate with residents today.

What Happened?
In the early hours of August 7, 1959, a fire broke out in the Gerretsen Building Supply Company warehouse, located in downtown Roseburg. Firefighters rushed to the scene to contain the blaze, unaware that a truck parked nearby was loaded with over six tons of dynamite and a smaller but powerful quantity of ammonium nitrate fertilizer.

At approximately 1:14 a.m., the explosives detonated, resulting in a massive explosion that destroyed several city blocks. The blast’s force was so immense that it shattered windows miles away and left a crater in the heart of the city. Buildings were leveled, cars were hurled through the air, and the destruction was almost unimaginable.

The Human Toll
The explosion claimed 14 lives, including firefighters, police officers, and civilians. More than 120 people were injured, and hundreds were left homeless as fires raged and debris blanketed the city. The blast caused an estimated $12 million in damage - over $120 million in today’s dollars.

Roseburg’s Response
In the aftermath, Roseburg’s resilience shone through. Residents, first responders, and volunteers worked side by side to rescue the injured, provide shelter for the displaced, and begin the long process of recovery. Federal and state aid flowed in, and the city began to rebuild, brick by brick.

The Roseburg Blast led to changes in regulations regarding the transportation and storage of hazardous materials. It also became a case study in disaster response and recovery for communities nationwide.

A Legacy of Strength
Sixty-six years later, the scars of the Roseburg Blast remain a part of the city’s identity. Memorials honor the victims and the bravery of those who responded. Each August 7th, Roseburg pauses to remember the tragedy, and to celebrate the spirit that carried the community through its darkest hours.
