Roseburg Fire Department Introduces Therapy Dog to Support First Responders

Roseburg, OR - The Roseburg Fire Department recently welcomed a new kind of responder to its downtown station: Lily, a certified therapy dog from CHI Mercy Health, who will play a role in supporting the mental wellness of emergency personnel.

Lily, a 4.5-year-old Golden Labrador, is the Chief Therapy Dog for CHI Mercy Health. In addition to her duties at the hospital, she provides emotional support services to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and the Roseburg Fire Department (RFD) during times of crisis or high stress.

Described by the department as calm and nurturing, Lily is trained to assist first responders following traumatic incidents. Her presence is intended to ease stress, promote emotional expression, and help responders process difficult experiences on the job.

In March 2024, Lily was recognized by the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association as the "Professional Animal of the Year." She holds several certifications, including AKC Canine Good Citizen and Therapy Dog credentials, and is currently working toward her AKC Expert Therapy Dog designation.

The RFD expressed appreciation for Chuck Allured, Lily’s handler, for his commitment to making Lily available whenever needed.

According to the department, therapy dogs like Lily are increasingly being used nationwide to support the mental health of first responders. Firefighters and emergency personnel often encounter high-stress situations and traumatic events, and therapy animals are seen as a way to provide comfort and resilience during challenging times.

RFD officials said Lily’s visit was a meaningful reminder of the importance of mental health resources and the diverse ways support can be offered, including through the quiet presence of a trained, friendly animal.
