Roseburg Fire Destroys Home on Fisher Road
A Roseburg man narrowly escaped after his home on Fisher Road caught fire Tuesday morning. Jim Barnes was asleep with earplugs in and woke only when passersby banged on his door. Central Douglas Fire & Rescue arrived within minutes, but the home and a nearby RV were already engulfed.

ROSEBURG, Ore. — A Roseburg man escaped serious harm Tuesday morning after his home went up in flames in the Garden Valley area.
Jim Barnes was sound asleep with earplugs in when the fire broke out at his home on the 1400 block of Fisher Road. He didn’t hear the blaze spreading until a passerby began banging on his front door, alerting him to the danger.
At 11:11 a.m., Central Douglas Fire & Rescue was dispatched to the scene following the passerby’s 911 call, which reported a mobile home fire with a vehicle still in the driveway. While crews were responding, they received word that explosions were occurring and that everyone had evacuated safely.
When firefighters arrived at 11:18 a.m., they found the single-story residence fully engulfed in flames, with an RV nearby also burning. Command declared a defensive strategy, and crews initiated an exterior fire attack to knock down the flames.
CDF&R responded with five pieces of fire equipment and three command units, totaling 16 paid and volunteer firefighters. The Sutherlin Fire Department assisted with a water tender, and PP&L crews provided support at the scene.
Although firefighters were able to contain the blaze, the home was a total loss. Due to heavy damage, the cause of the fire could not be determined. No injuries were reported.
As he stood outside watching smoke rise from the charred remains of his garage, Barnes lit a cigarette and stared at the destruction, left to wonder what comes next after losing nearly everything.
