ROSEBURG, Ore. A deeply troubling case of animal cruelty has come to light in Douglas County, where police say a Roseburg man is accused of killing a young puppy.

According to the Roseburg Police Department, officers arrested 21 year old Derek Lewis Moss after a friend reported a FaceTime call in which Moss allegedly displayed the aftermath of the incident. Investigators say the four month old puppy appeared to have been killed during that call, with visible blood on Moss’s face, clothes, and the surrounding area.

During interviews, Moss’s girlfriend told officers she had witnessed ongoing abuse of the puppy and said Moss had become increasingly aggressive toward the animal over the past week.

Moss is being held in the Douglas County Jail on two counts of first degree aggravated animal abuse and one count of first degree animal abuse. Jail records confirm he remained in custody as of Dec. 10.

Authorities are reminding residents to report suspected animal mistreatment immediately, noting that early intervention can prevent tragedies like this from occurring.
