The Rise of The Roseburg Receiver: From Local Scanner Feed to Regional Powerhouse

What began as a grassroots effort to keep the public informed during emergency events has quickly become one of the fastest-growing scanner communities in Oregon. The Roseburg Receiver, founded less than two years ago, has grown to nearly 15,000 members - a remarkable feat considering that many similar groups with larger numbers have taken over a decade to reach their current size.

A Community-Built Mission

The Roseburg Receiver was launched with a simple goal: provide Douglas County residents with fast, accurate, and transparent updates about local emergencies. From fire and medical calls to police activity, airport alerts, weather, local news, and ham radio communications, the platform has become a real-time hub of critical information - all fueled by a passion for public safety and open communication.

The community started modestly, sharing fire tones and dispatch traffic during a particularly active wildfire season. Over time, it expanded with more automation, live voice-to-text transcriptions, keyword-based alerting, and an increasing number of radio feed integrations.

Features That Set It Apart

The Roseburg Receiver now monitors:

  • Medical, Fire, and Police Dispatch across Douglas County
  • Live Voice-to-Text Transcription for immediate readability of scanner traffic
  • Automated Fire Tone Detection
  • Keyword Alerts for high-priority incidents
  • Streaming Integrations with Broadcastify, OpenMHz, YouTube, and direct links
  • Emergency Weather Updates
  • Ham Radio Communications for disaster preparedness

With 11 feeds on Broadcastify, 8 on OpenMHz, and 7 direct custom streams, the platform has built a highly reliable and redundant monitoring system — all tailored for public consumption, first responders, journalists, and scanner enthusiasts.

More Than Just a Feed

The group isn’t just about listening — it’s about community. Whether it’s coordinating during wildfires, tracking missing persons, supporting festival operations, or debunking false alarms, The Roseburg Receiver plays an active role in supporting both public awareness and public service.

It also has a strong educational aspect: helping people understand what they’re hearing, demystifying radio terms, and encouraging responsible engagement with emergency communications.

The platform’s creator also volunteers as a wildfire reporter for Watch Duty, a nonprofit app that delivers real-time wildfire alerts and updates across the western U.S. This connection helps bring timely, verified wildfire information to both local residents and a wider regional audience.

What’s Next?

With nearly 15,000 members and growing fast, The Roseburg Receiver shows no signs of slowing down. New features, expanded coverage, and further integrations are in the works - all while maintaining the core mission: real-time, reliable emergency communication for the people of Douglas County.

In a time when trust in information is more critical than ever, this platform stands out not only for its technology and speed - but for its commitment to truth, transparency, and service.

Tech-Driven and Open to All

In addition to live monitoring and reporting, The Roseburg Receiver has also launched an open-source community on GitHub. This initiative invites developers and radio enthusiasts to contribute tools and automation projects that enhance information gathering and emergency response capabilities for the region. While this open source community is very limited currently, it's expected to grow with more members and more code. If you wish to contribute, please email info@roseburgscanner.com.
